Improv games are a whole lot of fun but often for the wrong reasons. Our experience of threat comes from a perceived presence of risk. Some people would rather choose to jump out of an airplane than risk anything in front of a group. That is an intense feeling of threat. How we see ourselves and how others see us almost feels like a matter of life and death. Strangely, this is what makes improv games fun. Like a roller coaster or a haunted house, the simultaneous presence of threat and safety is what makes those experiences thrilling. This safe threat and risky safety makes improv joyful, and even better, it can reveal opportunities hidden within risk.
