History of Buddhism
David Dixon will provide the attendees with a brief history of Buddhism from Siddhartha Gautama’s lectures (the Suttas) 600 BCE through the three hundred years that the lectures were orally recorded until they were written down in the Tipitaka (Three Baskets—Vinaya, Sutta and Abhidhamma) round 300 BCE
The development of Theravada (300 - 100 BCE) and then Hinayana 100 CE to 400 CE, including the Lotus Sutra.
Then, the development and expansion of Vajrayana Buddhism (Tantric) 700 CE to 1100 CE.
Topics include
The “Sanskritization” of Buddhism, Maitreya and the Boddhisatva emphasis.
